Mrs. Wilda Baxter Fields of Glenwood was born in Glennville, GA on January 5, 1927.  She died in The Community Hospice House in Vidalia on May 9, 2018 after an extended illness that included a debilitating stroke more than nine years earlier.
Mrs. Fields graduated from Glennville High School in 1943 and from the University of Georgia with a degree in Home Economics in 1948. She enjoyed teaching Home Economics and later, kindergarten, fourth and fifth grades for 30 years, retiring from the Wheeler County School System in 1985.  She taught school in Hazlehurst, Quitman, Americus, Dublin, and Wheeler County, along with two years at    Ocmulgee Academy in Lumber City.  She was a wonderful seamstress and enjoyed cooking, watching the Food Network and watching Braves baseball!  She was a longtime member of Glenwood United Methodist Church and spent many years teaching Sunday School: first the Young Adults and then the Ladies’ Adult Sunday School Class.  She was a member and secretary of the Glenwood Garden Club for many years and enjoyed being a member of the NOAH Senior Citizen Group.
Mrs. Fields considered one of her greatest accomplishments to be working with the committee that acquired funding to establish and build the first medical clinic in Glenwood, GA in the early 1960’s.   Later, this clinic would become The Wheeler County Hospital.  She was the last living survivor of this committee.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lathan Leland Baxter and Gussie Lee Brannen Baxter of Glennville, one son, Gary Leland Fields, and her husband of forty five years, William Doyle Fields.
She is survived by two daughters, Melinda Scarborough (Fritz) of Glenwood, and Jeanine Meers (Rod) of Greensboro, NC, two sisters: Hilda Tootle (her twin), and Etwinda Rogers (Emery) of Reidsville, and several nieces and nephews.   She is also survived by five grandchildren:  Freling Scarborough IV and Will (Kate), Daniel, Michael, and Kimberly Meers.
Visitation for Mrs. Fields will be held 9:30 – 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Glenwood United Methodist Church with a Celebration of her life following at 11:00 AM.  She will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Glennville City Cemetery at 4:00 PM.  The Reverend Janet Sack will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask for donations to be made to the Glenwood United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 326, Glenwood, GA 30428.
Stewart – Rosier Funeral Service, Glenwood Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

Thoughts and prayers going out to the family. She was my English teacher when I was in the 5th grade at Wheeler County. She was such a sweet lady and will be missed.
