Mr. Donald L. Avery, age 79, of Mt. Vernon died Thursday, July 20, 2017 after a sudden illness. He was the son of George “Chip” Avery and Ellen Scarborough Rogers, and was born in Wheeler County. Don was a Veteran of the United States Army, and a member of the Lions Club. He worked with Georgia Power Company for 34 years, retiring several years ago, and was a Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon for many years.

Don loved his family, his church family, people, gardening, and working outside. He never met a stranger and loved music.

Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Darlene Avery of Mt. Vernon; his son, Donald Avery (Stacie) of Swainsboro; three grandchildren, Austin Proctor, Caleb Avery, and Jacob Avery all of Swainsboro: three brothers, Hershel Rogers, Bobby Rogers, and Jerry Avery: and his sister, Teeny Gay.

Funeral Services for Mr. Donald L. Avery will be held Sunday, July 23, 2017 at 3:00 PM at Mt. Vernon First Baptist Church with Reverend Karl Hay officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Stewart-Rosier Funeral Service Vidalia Chapel Saturday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

We just found out after church this morning about Uncle Don's passing. We were truly shocked to receive such sad news. Uncle Don was loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. Mrs. Darlene, Donald, and family: I am so very sorry to hear about Mr. Don. He had a spirit that brightened me up every time I saw him.
