Mr. Joe Rewis Strickland, age 73, of the Long Pond Community passed away after a short illness on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Community Hospice of Vidalia.

He was a lifelong resident of Montgomery County.  Mr. Strickland retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation as Assistant Area Engineer after 37 years of service.  At his death, he was serving his fifth elected term as Coroner of Montgomery County.

Mr. Strickland enjoyed conversing with friends and acquaintances, and sharing with them his son Stacy’s many accomplishments.  Another of his great pleasures was spending time with immediate family and close friends at home on the farm.  His cohorts remember Joe as a true southern gentleman, kind and considerate to the needy, both human and animal.  He was strong in his Christian faith.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sharon Harrison Strickland; one son, Dr. J. Stacy Strickland, daughter-in-law, Keri Bland Strickland and one granddaughter, Joesy Pauline Strickland of Nobleton, FL.

Funeral Services for Mr. Joe Rewis Strickland will be held Saturday, July 5, 2014, at 2:00 PM at Stewart-Rosier Funeral Service Vidalia Chapel with Reverend B.L. Horne and Reverend Robbie Rosier officiating.  Interment will follow in Moseley Cemetery near Uvalda.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening from 6-8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Ailey United Methodist Church or Community Hospice of Vidalia at 904 Mt. Vernon Road, Vidalia GA 30475.

Stewart-Rosier Funeral Service of Vidalia is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Sharon, We are saddened to hear of Joe's passing. I don't think we ever saw Joe when he did not take time to ask how we were doing. He was always seemed to be sincerely interested. You, Stacy and family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Sharon and Family, You all are in my thoughts and prayers. I will never forget Joe the evening I lost my son in a tragic accident. There were several ministers at the seen, even though Joe was not a minister, he was the only one to offer a prayer. He prayed the most comforting prayer. I will never forget Joe and his prayer during my troubled time. In christian love, Toby

Such a sweet, gentle and kind man. Always willing to help others while never really expecting anything in return. Had kind words for the people he encountered along his way. The community has lost a "true gentleman".

My Uncle Joe was kind Uncle with a gentle spirit. His was kind hearted to everyone he met. I will always remember him for always having a pack of gum in his pocket ( he always had a pack for my little brother & me), K-Mart in Savannah...he would always have the best surprises for me from that store, & most of all his absolute kindness to everyone.;

Payers for the Family, Dr. Stacy Strickland was a teacher and a friend to many of us in the Extension Master Gardener program and he did talk often of his father and how much he infulenced his life and work.
