Mount Vernon

Mrs. Mildred Padgett Fountain, age 91, of Mount Vernon died early Wednesday morning, June 19, 2013, at her residence after an extended illness.

Mrs. Fountain was born in Dublin, GA at home and later moved to the country, finishing Glenwood High School in 1941.  She met David Fountain at a ball game.  He courted her in a log truck. The couple was married in August of 1941 by Mr. Elliot, a Justice of the Peace, on his front porch.  The couple rented for a while and then built their first log house that looked like a little play house, but it was theirs.  The children came along from 1944 till 1952.  All of those years were so happy; David logged and raised cattle and Mildred worked for a long while at Ailey Manufacturing Company.   When Jimmy and Terry took over the logging in 1975, she and David started traveling and fishing.  The couple had a wonderful life together until David’s death in 2006.  Her loving children and grandchildren and her Sunday School and Church family ensured that her life remained purposeful and she loved them all for it.

The oldest member of the Mount Vernon First Baptist Church Mrs. Fountain was active in the Fidelis Sunday School Class and all church affairs.  She was instrumental in organizing the first Girl Scout troop in Mount Vernon and assisted in Boy Scout training. She was active as a grade mother in school. A proud and avid gardener, she especially loved Day Lilies, Roses, Hostas, and Camelia grafting.  Diggin’ a hole provided joy to her soul.  She loved sewing and held fashion shows.  In 2011, she was Grand Marshall of the Mount Vernon Christmas parade. Most of all, she was just so proud to be a country girl.

Mrs. Fountain is survived her daughter, Janis Fountain Gilder of Mount Vernon; three sons, James David Fountain, Jr and his wife Mary Ann of Mount Vernon; Dana Scott Fountain and his wife Sandra of Woodstock; and Terry Wayne Fountain and his wife Diane of Glenwood.  Eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive.  In lieu of flowers, donation in memory of Mrs. Fountain can be made to the charity of your choice or to Mount Vernon First Baptist Church, 120 S. Railroad Ave, Mount Vernon Ga, 30445.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mildred Padgett Fountain will be conducted Friday afternoon, June 21, 2013 at 1:00 PM from the Ronnie L. Stewart Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia with Reverend Karl Hay and Reverend John Elmore officiating.  Interment will follow in the Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 11:00 am on Friday.

Ronnie L. Stewart Funeral Service of Vidalia is in charge of funeral arrangements.

My prayers go out to the Mildred Fountain Family. Your mother was a wonderful lady! She will be missed so much by all of us. I so enjoyed going by her house and watching her garden grow. She and I have alot in common in that aspect. I love to work in the garden too. She will leave to you a legacy of being a great mother and grandmother and a great pillar of the community. May God Bless all of you!!!
