Mr. Calvin Vaughn, age 84, of Vidalia died late Wednesday night, May 24, 2017 at his residence under the care of Serenity Hospice. He was born December 4, 1932 in Emanuel County and graduated in 1949 from Oak Park High School.  After high school he joined the United States Army and served in Germany from 1953-1955.  After returning home from Germany, he graduated from Brewton Parker College in 1956 and then attended the University of GA Extension Program through GA Southern College where he received a business degree in 1958.  In 1957 he married Juanice Williams of Uvalda.  

Mr. Vaughn was an active member of Olney Primitive Baptist Church in Oak Park since 1950.  He served as song leader since 1950, served as a deacon for 53 years and served as treasurer for 39 years.  He was a member of Primitive Baptist Foundation Executive Committee for 21 years where he served as delegate for his church for over 30 years.

He was an active member and past President of the Vidalia Jaycees; he was a member of Vidalia Lions Club where he served as president from 1973-1974; he served on the Board of Directors of the Vidalia Chamber of Commerce; he served for many years as Chairman of the Vidalia Onion Festival Arts and Crafts Committee; he served as President of the Freedom of Choice Organization for Vidalia in 1969; he served as Poll Manager for Elections in Toombs County for 45 years.

Mr. Vaughn was one of the founding fathers of Robert Toombs Christian Academy in 1970.  He served on the Board of Directors for RTCA since 1970 where he held the positions of Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Board for many years and recently was named Director Emeritus.  He served as Chairman for the RTCA Fall Festival; he was the voice of “The Crusaders” at Friday night football games from 1971-2012.  He also witnessed the graduation of three children and five grandchildren from RTCA.

Mr. Vaughn served as your “Good Neighbor State Farm Agent” and retired with 54 years of service where he received numerous awards from State Farm.

He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed attending all sporting events.  Calvin has been a loyal citizen of Vidalia for over 60 years where he raised his family, operated his business and strived to serve his community in a way that was pleasing to God.

Mr. Vaughn was preceded in death by parents Elmer and Cellie Vaughn and Tyra Perry Vaughn; and his sister, Faye Garrett.

Calvin is survived by his wife of 60 years, Juanice Vaughn of Vidalia; three daughters, Vicki Calhoun (Mike) of Vidalia, Debbie Dees (Mike) of Cedar Crossing and Angie Westbrook (Blake) of Hawkinsville; his brother, Curtis Vaughn of Lyons; two sisters, Savilla Taylor of Vidalia and Karen Connell (Neal) of Vidalia; and seven grandchildren, Adam Calhoun, Lindsay Voigt (Scott), Morgan Topham (Chris), Kailey Dees, Hannah Dees, Jordan Manning (Blake) and Tanner Westbrook.  Several nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral Services for Mr. Calvin Vaughn will be held Tuesday May 30, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Stewart-Rosier Funeral Service Vidalia Chapel with Elder Bill Durrence and Reverend Blake Westbrook officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.  Visitation for Mr. Vaughn will be held at Robert Toombs Christian Academy in Lyons which is a place very special to him. The family will receive friends at the Gymnasium on Monday evening from   4:00 – 8:00 PM.
